One fact about me that you probably don’t know is that I’m a voracious reader and think of the bookstore like what Toys R Us is to a child. I was sort of one of those semi-nerds growing up who probably wanted to spend more money on books than clothing. Even now, my office has a stack of books that call out to me everytime I pass by. Sadly, I don’t get to read as often as I like, but one book that I’m currently enjoying is “The Book of Awakening” by Mark Nepo. It’s a collection of daily inspiration…it gives you a page or two to read every day and think about, which I love.
Today’s subject really hit home with me so I wanted to share it with you. It’s called “The Pain of Becoming” and basically discusses how we can judge and be hard on ourselves as we take each step towards reaching a goal. In today’s world especially, it’s allllll about instant gratification. We want and tell ourselves we need to get there NOW. As a result, we can be unfairly harsh or judgmental as we take our normal, human steps to get there.
I can say for sure that I have been guilty of this many times in the past. MANY. Did I say many? I guess that’s why I felt so compelled to write about it today after reading it. We should appreciate each step of the metaphorical ladder we are on and know that we are stepping just as we should be. If everything came to us as fast as we wanted it to, wouldn’t it take the fun and appreciation out of getting it?
I’ve put an excerpt of today’s page from the book up here so you can see it directly from Mark Nepo himself. Let me know what you think, I’d love to hear your comments!
Talk to you soon!
